For this project we helped ESD 112’s Math Anywhere project show Native American cultural practices that help children develop math skills.. We worked with Nanette Robinson of the Yakima Nation, and Cosmic Starr of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Tucson, Arizona, to share the cultural and community importance of traditional ribbon skirts and beading practices. We then spoke with Kristin Lesseig, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Washington State University – Vancouver, about how these practices help students learn patterns, standardized measurements, and develop skills related to spatial awareness and making informed estimates.
