How are you incorporating AI tools into your communications work?

Fred Gunnerson, Jr. Graphic & WordPress Designer
My AI usage focuses primarily on visual content. I regularly use AI tools within Photoshop for image enhancement, including subject removal and content fill-in when resizing images. The AI Smart Sharpening tool has been a game-changer for improving image quality without creating unwanted artifacts. I’ve also expanded into using Adobe Express to create new artwork, animate characters, and generate voiceovers.

Laura Martin, WordPress Developer and Content Manager
I’ve found AI incredibly helpful for quickly finding specific information. Instead of sifting through multiple Google search results, I use ChatGPT to get precise answers to my questions. One of my favorite applications is using AI to create accessible tables for the web—it’s much faster than coding by hand, though I still make necessary adjustments to ensure everything meets our standards. The automatic generation features in Photoshop have also become invaluable, especially when I need to transform vertical images into horizontal ones.

Melissa Burt, Senior Graphic Designer & Content Strategist
The Photoshop AI tools are amazing for adding more background in an image or removing unwanted elements. They are also a lifesaver when I have a photo I want to use, but there is something really distracting marring it, and I can’t crop around it. For example, I had a great photo of a group of students from a district that I wanted to feature, but one of the front and center students had an Otter Pop wrapper hanging down from their mouth. Photoshop’s generative AI was able to remove the wrapper and completely reconstruct their lower lip and chin. In another instance, there was a photo of students and one of the students immediately behind the focal student was wearing a medical mask that was distracting from the overall vibe of the photo. Generative AI was able to create some options of the lower half of that student’s face for me to choose from.
The ability to replace faces is also handy if there’s a “do not photograph” student in a group photo that you can’t crop out. I wouldn’t do it for the main subject of a photo, but the ability to generate a new face for a student in the background can mean the difference between having a great photo to use and not.
I have also used Adobe’s AI tools to generate scenic background illustrations, create illustrations for logos (for me to modify and refine), and to generate placeholder photos for layouts.

Justine Hanrahan, Communications Manager
AI has become my go-to tool for quickly analyzing survey results and processing longer texts. I’ve found it particularly valuable as a brainstorming companion, helping me consider how different audiences might perceive our messages. This helps ensure our communications are more inclusive and effective.

Malena Goerl, Communications Manager
ChatGPT has become an essential part of my toolkit. I use it primarily to summarize key themes from various data sets or information blocks and as a creative springboard when crafting social media captions or brainstorming story titles. It’s particularly helpful when I need fresh perspectives on content.

Mika Yoshida, Assistant Director of Communications
In my role, I rely on AI tools to help organize and summarize written content efficiently. They’re particularly useful when I need to analyze tonality and sentiments in social media commentary, helping us better understand and respond to our community’s feedback.

Yolanda Rivera, Administrative Assistant
AI has become integral to my daily workflow, from drafting emails to analyzing data. One of my favorite applications is using it to overcome writer’s block—sometimes, all you need is that initial spark to get the creative juices flowing and generate more ideas and content.
As AI technology continues to evolve, our Communications team is finding innovative ways to incorporate these tools into their daily work. From enhancing creativity and streamlining workflows to ensuring more inclusive communication, AI is helping our team members deliver more effective and efficient results while maintaining the personal touch that’s essential to meaningful communication.

Xander Hayes, TV ETC Coordinator and Video Services
I use AI to quickly generate transcripts, which I use as the basis for editing interview-based videos and podcasts. Interviews typically run 30 – 45 minutes, and podcast recordings can run for over an hour. Having a tool that can process an audio file and provide a (decently accurate) transcript to read through and help me organize the story beats is incredibly helpful. It would take me hours to manually type that much content.
For post-production, I’ve found that AI has greatly improved tools I started using over ten years ago. The advanced motion tracking I use to track objects for masks (in 1/24 of a second intervals no less) and stabilize camera clips are heads and shoulders better than the earlier versions of those same tools.
